RECENT STREET CHANGES IN YALETOWN - OCTOBER 2009
The current City of Vancouver project changing parking and dumpsters in Yaletown is nearing an end. We do our best to coordinate street changes to Yaletown’s benefit and at times we absolutely do require action from our members to back our efforts.

If you have concerns regarding the new street plan or consent to it and want to show your support, please use the contact information below to give your feedback.

LATEST UPDATE TEMPORARY GARBAGE CONTAINER ZONES - OCTOBER 13/09
On Tuesday, Oct 13th the dumpsters will be moved to "No Stopping - Garbage Container Only" zones on the loading dock side of the street. On each block there are two of these zones marked by signs. Each zone will hold six dumpsters stored short-side against the dock. See the excel spreadsheet which lists each container by customer address and assigns a number to each container for placement. All containers are to be stored perpendicular (90 degrees) to the dock – not angle parked in the manner that vehicle parking stalls are painted.

Finding your dumpster location: The PDF attachment includes maps of each block showing where the zones are located and what container belongs in each zone. Containers must remain in these signed zones - hauling companies will be asked to move any containers left outside of their designated area.

Note: The painted lines within the “Garbage Container Only” zones mark out vehicle parking stalls if containers are removed sometime in the future. When more business leave behind the dumpster system for the container system, these parking stalls will gradually become available.

NEW PARKING METERS AND DUMPSTER CORRALS - OCTOBER 09
The City is creating dumpster “corrals” that will be on the street against the loading docks keeping a few (three or four) dumpsters together and hopefully a lot tidier than before. As far as we know there will be two corrals per block and they will be placed near the ends of each block. After the parking meters and the dumpster corrals go in, then the dumpsters will be removed from the “Temporary Container Zones” (explained above) and the south-east side of Mainland and Hamilton Streets will be clear again.

GOING ZERO-WASTE - OCTOBER 09
It would be a great time to go zero waste! We are working on getting the neighbourhood dumpster free, but while this proceeds at the current pace, any business is more than welcome to take it upon themselves to go zero waste and adopt the container system. A good example of a business doing so already is our new YBIA member The Keg. They have a daily routine where totes are brought out to the street at a certain time to meet the truck who exchanges all the full totes with empty ones. Contact WasteLess at http://wasteless.com/ for more details on how you can get rid of your dumpster.

THE LATEST NEWS ON GOING DUMPSTER-FREE
Yaletown Initiative Earns 100% Support from City Council for Dumpster-Free Program

On November 29, 2007, City Council voted unanimously to remove dumpsters from City streets. For seven years, Yaletown BIA Board members and staff have worked hard to achieve this result by engaging members, waste haulers, industry associations and City departments. We carefully researched alternatives and have continually gathered evidence of how the status quo was not working. City Council was very clear in its decision, noting that credit was due in large part to the leadership of the Yaletown BIA for doing all of the groundwork and building partnerships and consensus.

Our partners now include; the BIA’s of Downtown, South Granville, Gastown, West End Davie Village and Robson Street. The Vancouver Board of Trade, Building Owners and Managers Association, BC Restaurant & Foodservices Association, Tourism Vancouver, various recycling organizations, Green Table and the GVRD are also at our table.

This is a huge achievement for Yaletown and, together with our partners, we will continue to lead the way as the new method of how everyone views and handles garbage is implemented.
